Student Success Story: Matsobane – from Engineering Trainee to Solutions Analyst

Posted by

When Matsobane Makhura was retrenched from his hardware engineering job, he knew it was time to find a career that wouldn’t be at risk. With the lockdown expanding and thousands of businesses turning to online platforms, remote teams, and digital services, he realised that becoming a software engineer would give him the job security he was looking for – he just needed the practical skills and hands-on programming experience to make his career switch. That’s when he signed up for his HyperionDev Software Engineer bootcamp.

Today, Matsobane works as a professional Solutions Analyst for FNB. We asked him about his journey in learning to code, and what it was like to make his career switch through HyperionDev’s coding bootcamps and tech skills development.

Matsobane had some experience in tech, but  knew he would need to take his skills one step further in order to secure his tech career. He signed up for his online part-time HyperionDev Software Engineer bootcamp in order to upgrade his career skill set alongside working his full-time job.

“In the beginning of 2020 I was blessed enough to join the FNB Grad Program to get hands-on experience of the IT world. I joined a wonderful team that gave me the opportunity to do some Research and Development in the AML world using cool tech. My co-worker inspired me to then take a leap of faith to learn the core basics of frontend development, and I then wanted to feed my curiosity and learn more about Software Engineering. That’s when I signed up at HyperionDev.”

Like many of our students, Matsobane knew that the tech career space offered attractive salaries and benefits, vast work opportunities, and the ability to work across the world (often remotely). That’s what he envisioned for his own future.

His part-time online Software Engineer bootcamp was a challenge, but one that taught him all the job-necessary coding skills his career would need.

“I think I had a lot of fire to just prove to myself that I can program. The bootcamp has opened my eyes to what I want to achieve in the next 6 months. Also, the code reviewing process was very supportive, because I knew I was on the right (or wrong) track, and my mentor gave me many real-life tips that I can use in my next role.”

Thanks to the practical experience Matsobane had in building real web apps and portals, he is now confidently pursuing his new career as a Solutions Architect at FNB. In the future, he hopes to build software tools that will help South African youth and people from all walks of life. If you’re considering learning to code or getting into technology, Matsobane has one thing to say: go for it.

“HyperionDev is such an awesome platform. If you want to learn to code and find a new career, you should go for it. Just be patient with yourself and understand that this is just the beginning. Be kind to yourself and listen to your hunger to know more: it will open new doors for you.”
